Family Care

Infant 0-1

Many parents bring in their infants because they have been told chiropractic care may help calm their “colicky” baby. The nervous system in a baby presenting with colic is often times not in balance. This causes the baby to stay in a sympathetic dominance “fight or flight” response. Babies who are having difficulties with breastfeeding, pooping, sleeping, startle easily, cry more than parents think they should, spit up, dislike of car seat, have to be swaddled or held all the time, and are difficult to soothe should be evaluated to see if chiropractic care could benefit the infant.

Another commonly seen “colic” symptom seen by Dr. Sonda is a baby who has a “tongue tie”/Anklyoglossia/ Tethered oral tissue (TOTs). Dr. Sonda has co-treated close to 500 babies who were having difficulties with TOTs. Babies who have TOTs are often diagnosed with having colic and told they will grow out if it. TOTs can cause the baby to stay in a flight or fight response because their nervous system is not able to stay in a calm “rest and digest” state. Dr. Sonda’s roll in caring for a baby with TOTs is to help the babies nervous system calm down and increase oral function prior to and after they have been evaluated or revised by a dentist or ENT.

Seeing a baby prior to them being revised helps to reduce compensation in the mouth and surrounding tissue thus allowing the tissue to be more exposed and relaxed before the revision. Parents often report that the baby shows improvements before they are revised just by having chiropractic and/or myofascial release. Post revision care helps to normalize function bringing the body into a more balanced state.

Toddler

The many stages of toddlers can have a profound impact on a child’s spine and nervous system. Toddlers make a jungle gym out of anything they come across and are more prone to accidents and falls than any other age group. Just like infancy, toddlers need a properly functioning nervous system to help them reach proper developmental milestones and continue working on those skills before entering school. Please see our Sensory Development page for further information on how Dr. Powell can work with you and your child.

Adolescents

The principles that began in early childhood about good health, exercise, and eating right should follow us into adolescence. Many parents are finding that if their child struggled in the early years it is even harder to make these changes when the child is getting older. This is also the age where children present with difficulties in school getting labeled as ADHD, dyslexia, hyperactivity, Sensory Processing Disorder, and even Autism.

Dr. Sonda has been working with children at all levels to help with bringing their body into a more balanced state through diet, lifestyle, and neuro sensory exercises. Dr. Sonda is available to discuss how certain diets may be able to help your child absorb the nutrients they are lacking. Many children Dr. Sonda works with kids that are not able to go into public settings without deregulation that could be caused from sensory over stimulus . Dr. Sonda has had many parents say their child was better able to work with other therapists after beginning to implement the changes that Dr. Sonda recommended. Dr. Sonda wants to be a partner in helping your child achieve Optimal Health and is more than willing to work with other providers as well as your child’s school to achieve this.

Teenagers

Whether your child is the star of the soccer team or a straight A student they will benefit from the care provided at our office. During this stage of development children are going through lots of changes before transitioning into being an adult. This is where many health issues begin to present subtly. Kids are always on the go and it is difficult to see if they are getting proper nutrition as well as enough rest. Stress also begins to creep into their lives as pressures of school and making good decisions weighs heavily on their minds. Our bodies become overwhelmed due to chemical, physical, and emotional stresses.

A teenager who eats a soda and candy bar for lunch, sits at a desk all day and is concerned about getting a good grade on a math test is a prime example of an unbalanced nervous system. Chiropractic is not just about adjusting the physical/mechanical subluxation. It is about restoring proper function to the entire neurosystem. This is why Dr. Sonda includes the chemical and emotional balance that needs to be there. Otherwise they will need to be adjusted daily just to function a little bit better.

Adults

One of the top reasons adults seek medical attention is due to back pain. When patients seek medical attention for a condition it is usually because they are unable to tolerate the pain associated with it. Most patients are given a muscle relaxer and a pain medication and told to go home and rest while the inflammation goes down but this type of treatment doesn’t get to the root cause of what is underlying but rather treats the symptom. Chiropractic care looks to correct the underlying cause and helps to prevent another similar occurrence through specific spinal manipulation as well as supporting exercises and lifestyle modifications.

Both Drs Riley and Sonda utilize chiropractic care as their initial treatment to restore and balance the nervous system. Many patients who have received care in our office report decreased lower back pain, decreased radiating pain in legs and arms, no more sciatica or piriformis syndrome, decreased headaches, increased energy, better more restful sleep and the ability to exercise without pain.

List of common conditions:

  • Upper, Mid or Low Back Pain
  • Neck Pain & Stiffness
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Numbness/Tingling
  • Chest Pain
  • Extremity Pain (Arm & Leg)
  • Hip Pain
  • Knee Pain
  • Ankle/Foot Pain
  • Headaches

Seniors

The amazing thing about chiropractic care is that it can be modified to accommodate every patient. The techniques that are used in our office are gentle enough for the tiniest and even the frailest of bones later in life. Many of our senior patients are unable to receive manual manipulations. However, they continue to get the relief as if they had received an osseous adjustment. Many patients find that cranial release, cox flexion, and myofascial release are just as restorative. We would love to accommodate you any way possible.
