Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I have never seen a chiropractor, what can I expect at my first appointment? First-time patients should plan for at least an hour at their first appointment. In some cases, x-rays will be taken to determine your baseline and provide guidance in a care plan going forward. Women who could be or are pregnant as well as children will not receive x-rays. After that, most appointments will not take more than 10 to 15 minutes.

Do you work with children? Yes! Both Dr. Sonda and Dr. Riley are trained in caring for pediatric patients.  Dr. Sonda has advanced training in working with children who have sensory processing disorder as well as children with Autism.

I have heard Dr. Powell works with tongue-tied babies, what care is provided for tongue tie patients? Dr. Powell works with tongue-tie patients and providers both pre- and post-Frenectomy.  Dr. Sonda works with parents giving them instruction on balancing their baby’s nervous system through various neurodevelopment exercises well as providing cranial sacral, myofascial and chiropractic care.  Dr. Sonda is able to make referrals to qualified providers who have advanced training in the diagnosis of Tethered Oral Tissues (TOTS) and release of restricted oral tissues.

Do you think you can help me with my health problem? Dr. Powell uses an innovative system-wide approach to assessing and treating your health care concerns. Perhaps you have experienced being examined by your doctor, having blood tests done, x-rays or other diagnostic tests taken, only for your doctor to report back that “all your tests are normal.” Yet, you know that you are sick. Unfortunately, this experience is all too common!

Most physicians are trained to look at the body as individual separate systems rather than as a whole. The usual tests do not look for food allergies, hidden infections, environmental toxins, mold exposures, nutritional deficiencies and metabolic imbalances. New gene testing can uncover underlying genetic predispositions that can be modified through diet, lifestyle, supplements and other natural treatments.

At Optimal Health and Wellness, Dr. Powell uses innovative testing and evaluation methods to help patients prevent illness and recover from many chronic and difficult-to-treat conditions. She also focuses on the important role that the nervous system has on health and healing. Dr. Powell has successfully worked with patients suffering from chronic problems such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndromes, autoimmune diseases, inflammatory disorders, mood and behavior disorders, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), various gastrointestinal disorders, fertility issues, seasonal allergies, asthma, ADD/ADHD, autism and other complex conditions. Dr. Powell focuses on alleviating the body of chemical, physical and emotional stressors hindering a person from reaching optimal health. She uses a “system wide” approach- looking at the body as a whole.

How will lab tests be performed at Optimal Health and Wellness? Some testing can be done through conventional laboratories and others are only available through functional medicine laboratories. During your consultation appointment, Dr. Powell will determine which tests are needed and review with you testing recommendations, instructions (ex: fasting or non-fasting, etc.) and costs. Some testing requires collecting urine, saliva or stool at home. Others may require you to go to a local laboratory to have blood drawn. In all cases, we will assist you in coordinating initial and follow-up testing.

All lab results will be reviewed with you at the time of your follow up appointment. We do not email lab results to patients. The exception to this is if you have a follow up appointment by phone- we will email your lab results prior to your appointment.

Do you take insurance? Optimal Health and Wellness does accept insurance for certain things. The staff can help you determine benefits and what insurance will and will not cover. We do not bill insurance for any massage visits, consultations, or sensory work. If we do not accept your insurance please know that we have made that decision because some insurance limits us to only working on patients after an injury or accident where as our whole body approach is what really helps a patient achieve optimal health. You wouldn’t take your car to get the brakes replaced without them also checking the tires and alignment.  We don’t want to be limited to how we can help you and are more than happy to discuss ways for you and your family to access the care you need.  We expect payment in full by check, cash or credit card due at the time services are provided unless otherwise agreed upon.

Can you do a payment plan? While we do not offer a payment plan, we do work with Care Credit which has many financial options that include no interest and can be used at other offices that also accept this as payment. We also offer the Family Wellness Plan for patients who would like to receive monthly maintenance adjustments at a reduced rate. You can view our Family Wellness Plan here.
